The Block to the Raiders hat ended up at Failsworth the complete set. However these blocks were then used as machine blocks on a pouncing machine and covered with felt. No one simply knew what they were. When HJ went through changes in the mid 80's these blocks stayed with Battersbys and were forgotten about. Cut to 2010. And these blocks ended up in storage when the factory closed. We purchased them back, but unfortunately they had been stored in a unit open to the elements. approx 90% of the block were ruined. Save one block which we had remade into a full set of blocks to remake the current fedoras.
Here's a pic of the original Herbert Johnson Raiders block the Jack@HJ has been talking about. -TS
Hi folks A little busy at the moment. I'll update a more concise history later Basically. Long story short... Turns out we already had it, for the past three years. Purchased from the guy who blocked the original (is in sale itinerary) the company that did it for us back in the day were selling all their equipment. Out of Manchester. They were never used after Raiders because they were old even then, they were repurposed, stored and forgotten about. People in this business never throw things away. HJ had changed hands so many times in the interim that no one remembered. Or those that did had moved on. It wasn't lost. Just forgotten about. Richard swales probably wasn't too aware of this. For what reason I don't know. A colleague at HJ Was adamant we had them after the equipment purchase . But I couldn't find. I couldn't find them because they'd been covered in felt for use in a machine. It wasn't until I pulled the felt off that I found what they actually were. They were marked. I'd actually made the mistake of ignoring them. Because at the time they were covered covered in felt, they didn't look like indy blocks. But my colleague was adamant we had them. So I searched and searched through our huge Block store we'd purchased. Most of the blocks were ruined after being stored incorrectly. Some were just too old I found them.
