Betreff: Re: Peitsche (Woher und Wieviel?)
That is a very true statement - BUT - In case you think my whips don't have an "Innenleben", let me correct you! All my whips are totally hand made and everything is cut by hand without a strand cutter. This is an important point in my opinion as using a strand cutter doesn not make allowance for the different stretchiness of diffenret parts of the hide. Cutting by hand enables more even strands.
My whips are based on an 8" steel handle foundation, loaded with lead in the butt section. This helps to get a good balance in the whip and prevents long whips from being "nose heavy".
The handle foundation is attatched to a rolled leather core over which is braided a 4 plit kangaroo belly. This is covered in a first bolster over which a second 4plait belly is braided. A second bolster covers the second belly and the overlay is braided in 12 strands. There are 3 strand drops so the whip ends in a 6 pliat point.
Every strand of the bellies and overlay is cut by hand, stretched and bevelled to ensure an even and consistent braid.
I've sold a lot of whips over the last few years and my customers (some of whom also own whips by othe whipmakers such as Strain and Morgan) seem to be more than happy with them. david Morgan himself has tried out one of my whips and was most complimentary.
I've not owned a whip by Mike Murphy, but I have owned several Strains, Morgans, DelCarpios, Stenhouses and Winrichs. There are a LOT of very fine whipmakers out there - some specialise in bullwhips, others in Stockwhips. I'd say it's a matter of opinion as to who the "best in the world" is. As for Indy bullwhips - Murphy's aren't even close to screen accurate. That's not to say he's not a great whipmaker - just he doesn't offer the best Indy whip. And I'm not saying that I do!
Sorry for the English, but it would take me week to write all that in German!
