Betreff: Re: Indyorama
"Cairo," Sallah said proudly, spreading his arms across the endless sea of rooftops. "A hellish city... and paradise on Earth."
Indy leaned against the balcony, smiling. "Still smells the same."
"Dust?"
"Camels."
Sallah laughed so heartily that pigeons scattered from a nearby rooftop. Indy had been welcomed into Sallah’s house as if only a matter of weeks had passed since they last met. But it had been years. Even so, Sallah had changed very little. The same intelligent eyes in the brown face, the same energetic cheerfulness, the hospitable warmth. "It is good to see you again, my friend.", he said.
"It really is."
For a brief moment, neither of them spoke, just enjoying the comfort of each others company. Finally, Sallah's smile faded. "So... what impossible thing are we looking for this time?"
Indy reached into his pocket and unfolded a weathered sketch. "The Tablet of Thoth."
Sallah's eyebrows rose. "Oh."
"There are only rumors," Indy admitted. "A dealer claims it surfaced a few weeks ago somewhere in Cairo. If he's telling the truth, we've got maybe a day's head start."
"And who else is looking?"
Indy didn't answer immediately.
The silence told Sallah everything. "Competitors?"
Indy nodded.
Sallah sighed deeply. "My friend... one day you will visit Cairo simply for the food and hospitality."
Indy folded the sketch and slipped it back into his pocket. "I keep meaning to."
With a grin, Sallah gestured toward the maze of streets below. "Then let us not waste time and find the greatest archaeological treasure in Egypt, before someone else does." He paused dramatically. "And afterwards..."
"And afterwards?"
Sallah smiled and put his hands on his belly. "Afterwards, we eat!"
