Nachfolgend mein erster Eindruck, den ich letzte Woche auf Social Media - gleich nach der Sichtung von Disclosure Day - gepostet hatte (sorry, in englisch):
We just got home. What can I say…?
Disclosure Day is definitely solid Spielberg craftsmanship. We get everything we expect from his films: suspense, comedy, drama. Emily Blunt plays her role (which is extremely complex) exceptionally well. Hats off to her. The rest of the cast is good, although I would have liked a bit more depth from some of the other characters to better understand their motivations.
All in all, the film is certainly very entertaining, BUT… it doesn't quite ignite the spark. A lot happens at the beginning, which you need time to process and understand. The connections between the parallel storylines only become clear in the second half of the film. The subject matter is incredibly exciting, but "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" captivated me far more in direct comparison. The timing of the ending isn't perfect for me either, even though I expected it at that exact moment. What happens after that leaves quite a bit to the viewer's imagination. I absolutely have to watch the film again to form a final opinion, because at this point, I'd give it a maximum of 7 out of 10 as a whole.
Finally… the Williams score: I absolutely have to listen to that properly (when it arrives). The film features beautiful symphonic accompaniment throughout, sometimes even with choirs, but nothing really sticks. During the end credits, I listened to the End Credits Suite, and you get the Impression that Williams simply strung together symphonic bits and pieces that certainly work as background music but unfortunately don't leave a lasting impression. But I'm certainly not complaining. The man is 94 years old, and we can all be grateful that he composed anything for Steven at all. I simply think he deliberately chose a Spielberg film as his final score… but due to his age and perhaps also his condition, it really is (upon first listening to the film) just background music and in no way comparable to Close Encounters or E.T. (to stay on topic).
Just my two cents…
I'm sure some of you will have a completely different opinion about the film and the score… But as I said, I need to give both a second viewing/listening before I can make a final judgment…
